Overview And Highlights

Mani Rimdu is one of the biggest festivals of the Sherpa in the Khumbu region. During this period the local Sherpa as well as the Tibetan communities gather and celebrate in monastic community. Mani Rimdu is celebrated as the victory of formation of Buddhism in Tibet by Guru Rinpoche. Sherpa from the Khumbu region gather in Thenboche monastery frowhere we can witness the picturesque view of Mt Everest as well as Ama Dablam. During the festive session the ten days of nonstop prayer is done which is dedicated to patron deities asking blessing from god to all the mankind.This three day celebration starts with blowing of horns after that the monks start to chant the prayers in the monastery. The people attaining the prayers are blessed and showered with holy water and auspicious pellets for good luck and longevity. The second day of celebration is started with an orchestra of cymbals, horns, flutes and conch shells. With the music performed by the orchestra the monks in colorful robes and huge scowling masks perform dance representing the destruction of evil. On the third or last day of celebration Tormas( figure made up of dough) are relegated to the sacred fire which signifies the end of negative energy and an new dawn of a sanctified new year.
