Overview And Highlights

Indrajatra(August-September) this festival of Lord Indra who is the king of Heaven and God of rain is celebrated with great passion in Kathmandu Valley. The festival starts with a erection of Yosin a ceremonial pole which is accompanied by the display of Aakash Bhairab. The main attractions of this eight day festival are chariots and masked dancer who represent deity and demon. During the particular festival the chariots carrying the statue of Lord Ganesh and Lord Bhairab are pulled in the different part of the Kathmandu. Families who have lost their loved ones take part in the fest by lighting the lamps in the street. This festival was started with Gunakamadeva in the honor of founding of Kathmandu. Finally the Goddess Kumari (living Goddess) leaves her seclusion and walk through the streets of Kathmandu to thank God Indra.
