Each step forward is a step into a realm where the earthly and the celestial intertwine.
By March, the first whispers of spring herald a change in the landscape. As trekkers ascend the verdant trails to Namche Bazaar, nestled at 3,440 meters, the snow-laden peaks reveal their hidden grandeur. The forests of pine and rhododendron start to awaken, their vibrant blossoms a stark contrast to the lingering snow. The path, now dotted with the delicate hues of early spring, offers a feast for the senses, accompanied by the serene sound of rushing streams and the distant call of Himalayan birds.
April brings a climactic shift. The air, now more temperate and inviting, allows trekkers to revel in the ever-expanding views of Everest’s towering silhouette. By May, the journey reaches its zenith. At Everest Base Camp, perched at 5,364 meters, the world feels both vast and intimately small. The mighty Khumbu Icefall stretches like a frozen river, its jagged beauty echoing the grandeur of Everest itself. The spring sun casts a golden light over the icy expanse, and trekkers stand in awe of the mighty summit that pierces the sky. Here, amidst the ethereal silence, the spirit of adventure soars, mingling with the whispers of the wind and the eternal grandeur of the Himalayas.

In the heart of the Himalayas, where the skies embrace the snow-capped peaks and the air is as crisp as a winter’s morning, the Everest Base Camp Trek unfolds in March, April, and May like a grand, serene ballet. This is the season when the world’s highest mountain reveals itself in all its awe-inspiring majesty, and the trek to its base becomes a pilgrimage of both body and soul.
March marks the tender beginning of spring in the Everest region. The harsh winter has begun to wane, but the lingering chill adds a crisp clarity to the air. As trekkers set foot on the path, they find themselves enveloped in a landscape that feels both fresh and ancient, untouched and eternal. The snow, still stubbornly clinging to the peaks, glistens like a thousand diamonds under the first warm rays of the sun. The forests of pine and rhododendron, now beginning to stir from their winter slumber, start to show signs of life. The occasional bloom of early wildflowers adds vibrant splashes of color to the otherwise monochromatic canvas, making every step a visual delight.
April brings a profound transformation. The days grow longer, and the weather becomes a harmonious blend of warmth and coolness, perfect for trekking. The mountains stand proud and clear against the azure sky, their majestic profiles seemingly carved by the gods themselves. It’s the height of the trekking season, when the trails are alive with the rhythmic footfalls of adventurers from around the world, each drawn by the magnetic allure of Everest. This is also when the flora reaches its zenith, with rhododendrons in full bloom creating a vivid tapestry of pinks, reds, and purples that contrast beautifully with the snowy peaks. The air is filled with the invigorating scent of pine, and the trail is lined with the cheerful sounds of nature awakening from its winter sleep.
By May, the Everest Base Camp Trek reaches its peak in terms of popularity and splendor. The weather is at its most stable, with clear skies and minimal risk of snowfall, allowing unobstructed views of Everest and its surrounding giants. The temperature is pleasantly mild, making the arduous trek more manageable and enjoyable. As trekkers ascend higher, they are greeted by a panorama of icy giants and expansive glaciers that stretch as far as the eye can see. The Khumbu Icefall, a labyrinth of crevasses and seracs, stands as a testament to the raw power of nature, while the air at the base camp itself is filled with a sense of anticipation and reverence. The base camp is a hive of activity, with climbers preparing for their ascent and trekkers marveling at the proximity to the world's highest summit.
Each of these months offers a unique tapestry of experiences, woven together by the ever-present grandeur of Everest. The trek becomes not just a physical journey but a deeply spiritual one, as travelers find themselves humbled by the sheer scale of nature’s creations. The serenity of the mountain landscape, coupled with the camaraderie among trekkers and the warm hospitality of the local Sherpa people, makes this trek an unforgettable odyssey.
In the end, the Everest Base Camp Trek in March, April, and May is a celebration of nature’s beauty and the indomitable spirit of human adventure. It is a time when the mountains and the trekkers come together in a harmonious dance, each step taken in reverence of the towering peaks and the dreams they inspire.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Lukla / Ramechhap to Lukla Flight (40/20 minutes) and Trek from Lukla (2,860 meters) to Phakding (8,562 ft/2,650 meters)
Trek distance: 6.2 km
Trek Time: 3-4 hours
The first day of your 12-day Everest Base Camp Itinerary begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla in 40 minutes. There are few flights from Kathmandu to Lukla due to air traffic regulations, and as of this, you may not get a direct flight from Kathmandu.
So, you'll take an early morning drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap airport for 4-5 hours. And then, you'll fly from Ramechhap airport to Lukla airport for 20 minutes. The flight is scenic as you'll see beautiful landscapes, terraces, and mountains in the Everest region before landing at the world's most adventurous airport, Luka.
Many consider Lukla airport a risky airport to land at, but no such risk factor is associated with it. And if you want to avoid the flight, you can also take Kathmandu to Lukla Helicopter Flight from Nepal Adventure Eco Treks.
After landing at Lukla, depending on how early you'll land, you'll take breakfast or lunch at Lukla. After some rest and preparations, you'll trek to Phakding via beautiful settlements like Chaurikharka, Ghat, and Phakding.
Phakding is just 6.2 km from Lukla, and the trekking route is easy as you'll hike on flat terrain for most parts. And while walking, you'll enjoy the cascading Dudh Koshi and lush semi-alpine vegetation en route.Overnight at the tea house in Phakding.
Day 2: Trek from Phakding (8,562 ft/2,650 meters) to Namche Bazaar (11,285 ft/3,440 meters)
Trek distance: 4.6 miles/ 7.4 km
Trek time: 5-6 hours
You'll start the hike around 8 am after having a decent breakfast at the tea house in Phakding. You may feel some cold for an hour from Phakding as the towering hills around Phakding block the sunlight. But upon reaching ToTok, you'll get the sunrays and continue hiking warmly.
You'll cross four suspension bridges on your third-day Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary hike. And all the bridges are above the rushing Dudh Koshi River, a major river in the Khumbu region. And amidst all, the Hillary bridge at Larch Dovan, at 2,935 meters, is the most thrilling as it's insignificant height, and the wind blows pretty hard as you hike.
You'll hike through beautiful settlements past Phakding, ToTok, Monjo, and Jorsale. You'll stop at Monjo Trekker's checkpost to verify the Everest Base Camp Trek Permit. And after a ten minute hike from Monjo, you'll reach Jorsale and stop for lunch.
From Jorsale, you'll hike for two and a half hours to Namche Bazaar. The trekking route progresses on the Dudh Koshi river shore for half an hour, and then you ascend to Namche. Past Larcha Dovan till Namche, you'll gain nearly 500 meters in altitude.
You'll reach Namche Bazaar around 3 pm, and it may get cold as this region gets covered by fog after 1 or 2 pm.Overnight at the tea house at Namche Bazaar.
Day 3: Rest day at Namche Bazaar. Acclimatization hike to Hotel Everest View (12729 ft/3,880 meters)
Hike distance: 3-4 km
Trek Time: 3-4 hours
You'll stop at Namche Bazaar for a day's rest to acclimatize better at a high altitude. And for this, you have plenty of day-hike options. But the most preferred one is a hike to Hotel Everest View at Syangboche at 3,880 meters.
After breakfast at the tea house, you'll head to Sagarmatha National Park in Namche Bazaar. From there, you'll get the first glimpse of Everest and Ama Dablam.
You'll start the hike to Hotel Everest View from the national park area. You'll gain some altitude for the first 30-40 minutes as the trail ascends. You'll reach the viewpoint at Syangboche airport, from where you'll see the panorama of the Everest region. You'll see Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Khumbila, Tawoche, Kongde, Kusum Kanguru, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and more.
You'll hike a further 30 minutes to Hotel Everest View for breakfast and panoramic glimpses of Everest. You can enjoy the appealing mountain glimpses with a sip of your coffee sitting in the courtyard of this hotel.
You'll return to the tea house at Namche Bazaar for lunch. And for the day, you can stroll around the alleys of Namche Bazaar and can even do last-minute shopping or withdraw money from ATM counters. You'll get multiple options to spend a day at Namche, including sunbathing.Overnight at the tea house in Namche.
Day 4: Trek from Namche Bazaar (11,285 ft/3,440 meters) to Tengboche(12,850 ft/3,855 meters)
Hike distance: 5.7 miles/9.2 km
Trek Time: 5 hours
The fourth-day hike on Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary takes you from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche or Deboche, a five-hour walk, and a 9.2 km distance away.
You'll hike on a relatively comfortable trekking route on the fourth day till Punke Thanka. And past Punke Thanka, you'll ascend for the rest of the hike till Tengboche.
After leaving Namche, you'll hike on a moderately straight trekking route for two hours. You'll then descend to the Dudh Koshi River shore and stop at Punke Thanka for lunch.
After lunch at Punke Thanka, you'll cross a suspension bridge, check in at the trekker checkpoint, and continue the ascent to Tengboche. As it'll be a sunny day, you may feel the heat and sweat more. Hence, stop multiple times for rehydration.
Tengboche Monastery will be the first thing you'll witness at Tengboche. Also, Ama Dablam appears close to Tengboche.
As it's the best place to stay overnight, you may not get the tea houses during peak Everest trekking season. Hence, you may have to hike further to Deboche and stop for overnight accommodation.Deboche will be the last place to take a hot water shower. Above Deboche, it'll be freezing, and it's not good to shower.Overnight at the tea house at Tengboche or Deboche, depending on the trekker's crowds.
Day 5: Trek from Tengboche(12,850 ft/3,855 meters) to Dingboche (14,290 ft/4,360 meters)
Hike distance: 7.45 miles/12 km
Trek Time: 5-6 hours
The hike from Tengboche to Dingboche on the fifth day of Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary is a long day hike, around 12 km for nearly 6 hours. But the walk becomes impressive as you hike alongside the beautiful Ama Dablam.
After breakfast, you'll start the hike at around 8 am to Dingboche. After some minutes, you'll cross a bridge and continue walking on the most amazing trekking trails. One hour hike from the bridge takes you to Pangboche village, which looks spectacular with the Ama Dablam mountain on the panorama. You can stop for tea or a rehydration break here.
Another one-and-a-half-hour or a two-hour hike from Pangboche will take you to Somare, where you'll stop for lunch.Past Somare, you may get cold due to the cold wind. But the fantastic landscapes keep you entertained.
The trekking route from Somare remains relatively comfortable till Dingboche, except for the final ascent from the Tsola River Bridge.
When you reach Dingboche, it may be cold due to clouds and fog, which usually covers the region past 3 pm.
Dingboche is the best place to view the sunset over Ama Dablam mountain, as it'll turn pink with the setting sun's rays. Overnight at the best available tea house in Dingboche.
Day 6: Acclimatization at Dingboche (14,290 ft/4,360 meters). Hike to Nangkartshang Viewpoint (4,700/4,800 meters)
Hike distance: 3-4 km
Trek Time: 3 hours
It's crucial to stop for a day at Dingboche before leaving for Lobuche. If you acclimate well at Dingboche, you won't have any issues hiking to Everest Base Camp.

There's no limit to how high you can hike from this viewpoint, but it's better to hike up to 4,700 to 4,800 meters. And from that altitude, you'll get spectacular glimpses of mountains, including the world's fifth-highest peak, Makalu. From Nangkartshang Viewpoint, you'll get the best view of Island Peak, Chhukung Ri, Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Tawoche, Makalu, and glacier lakes of Ama Dablam base, and Cholatese base.
Some trekkers also hike to Island Peak Base Camp instead of Nangkartshang Peak, but it takes an entire day to hike up and return to Dingboche. If you want to walk to Island Peak Base Camp or Chhukung Ri, you must be with a trekking guide from a local agency like Adventure Nepal Eco Treks. Our experience Everest region trek guides will guide you through safely.

The beautiful morning starts with breakfast at a tea house in Dingboche. You'll start the hike around 8 am on a trail to Thugla, which is easy and flat in most parts. And you'll hike on trial on the left above Pheriche. The marvelous glimpses of Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and peaks en route to Cho La Pass accompany you till Thugla.

After breakfast at a tea house in Pheriche, you'll leave for Namche early. The first stop will be Somare for tea and a rehydration break. From Somare, you'll reach Pangboche within an hour with an excellent glimpse of Ama Dablam on the backdrop.
