Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Monkey Temple, and Kathmandu Durbar Square

Nestled within the embrace of the towering Himalayas, the Kathmandu Valley is a treasure trove of history, spirituality, and culture. As you wander through its ancient streets and sacred sites, you are drawn into a world where every corner tells a story, every temple hums with devotion, and every monument whispers the echoes of time.

Pashupatinath Temple

Your journey begins at the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a testament to the deep spiritual roots of Hinduism in Nepal. As you approach the temple complex, the aroma of incense mingles with the soft chants of devotees, creating an atmosphere steeped in reverence. The air is thick with the energy of prayer, and the rhythmic sound of bells resonates as you walk past the gilded roofs and intricately carved wooden pillars.

Pashupatinath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is not just a temple; it is a living entity, a place where life and death converge in a sacred dance. The banks of the Bagmati River, where funeral pyres burn and mourners gather, serve as a poignant reminder of the impermanence of life. Observing the rituals and the serene faces of the priests, you gain a deeper appreciation for the cycle of existence, leaving you both contemplative and in awe of the traditions that have thrived here for centuries.

Boudhanath Stupa

As you leave the spiritual haven of Pashupatinath, your next destination is the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Approaching the stupa, the towering structure looms before you, its white dome symbolizing the universe and its colossal mandala inviting you to immerse yourself in its tranquility.

Surrounded by a bustling marketplace filled with colorful prayer flags, artisan shops, and lively cafes, Boudhanath is a center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. As you walk clockwise around the stupa, spinning the prayer wheels imbued with mantras, you can feel the pulse of the place, a rhythm that echoes the beliefs of countless pilgrims who have journeyed here to pay homage. The serene faces of monks in maroon robes, the soft murmur of prayers, and the sweet scent of butter lamps create an atmosphere of peaceful contemplation.

As the day wanes, the stupa is illuminated by soft lights, casting an ethereal glow over the surroundings. Sitting on a nearby rooftop, you sip on sweet milk tea, watching the sun dip below the horizon as the stupa transforms into a glowing beacon of spirituality, radiating peace and serenity.

Monkey Temple (Swayambhunath)

Your exploration continues as you make your way to Swayambhunath, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple. Perched high on a hill, the stupa offers a panoramic view of the entire valley. The ascent to Swayambhunath is a gentle yet invigorating climb, with hundreds of stone steps winding through lush greenery. Along the way, you encounter playful monkeys darting around, their antics adding a touch of whimsy to the spiritual ambiance.

Upon reaching the stupa, you are greeted by the sight of the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha painted on its façade, watching over the valley with wisdom and compassion. The atmosphere here is charged with a sense of connection to both the earthly and the divine. As you circumambulate the stupa, you pause to light a butter lamp, sending your wishes into the universe.

The vibrant colors of prayer flags flutter in the breeze, creating a stunning contrast against the blue sky. With the sun setting behind the hills, the valley glows beneath a blanket of orange and pink hues. The serenity of the moment fills your heart, reminding you of the sacredness of life and the beauty of the journey.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Finally, your adventure leads you to Kathmandu Durbar Square, a historical heart of the city, rich with medieval architecture and cultural heritage. As you stroll through the square, the intricate carvings and majestic temples transport you back to the Malla kings’ era. The sound of artisans at work, the laughter of children playing, and the calls of vendors selling traditional snacks create a lively tapestry of life.

The towering Taleju Temple, the majestic Hanuman Dhoka Palace, and the exquisite Kasthamandap, believed to be made from the wood of a single tree, are testaments to the architectural brilliance of a bygone era. You can almost hear the echoes of royal proclamations and the laughter of courtly gatherings that once filled these grounds.

“Professional, reliable, Amazing!”January 2023

Our experience with this company has been marvelous. Our booking was clear, quick and effortless. The tour was exactly what was stated on the itinerary. But When we decided to make a last minute change to book flight back to kathmandu instead of taking the bus, Devi has shown his robustness by quickly booking the flight without any hassle.

The overall service was very professional from start to finish. Devi and the driver were early at the airport for pick up. He followed up once during the the trekk to check up on our experience. Any questions and inquiry was quickly answered.

The guide has been an amazing part of our trekk and no less professional. Probahit started the trekk by showing his guide certificate, letting us know our rights to complaint, which was far from needed! Probahit was proactive during the trekk, providing snacks, fruits and any help that our body language suggests. He went extra mile to ensure our trip is pleasant. Through out the trekk, probahit provided a thorough commentary on the culture, geography and history of the place.

I highly recommend this company.
