The full name of this monastery is GandenNamgyal Ling; Ganden means joyful Namgyal Ling means victorious temple. This monastery is located in Wangbur Mountain on the southern bank of Lhasa River is Tagtse County about 39km from the Potala palace of Lhasa at an altitude of 3,800m from sea level. Ganden Monastery is one of the historic and largest monasteries in Tibet and is crowned as the outstanding among the six famous temples of Gelupa; a branch of Tibetan Buddhism.
Its significance in terms of religious, political, artistic and cultural artifact has led it to be preserved by National Key Cultural Relic Preservation scheme in 1961. Since then it is known as one of the Three Great Temples along with Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery. Annually one of the biggest Buddhist activities called Buddha Painting Unfolding Festival which is conducted monastery luring thousands of visitors and disciples.

Jokhang Temple, situated in the heart of Old Lhasa, it houses Tibet's most prized religious artifact, a golden Shakyamuni Buddha which was brought as a gift by the Chinese Princess Wen Cheng on the occasion of her wedding to the Tibetan King, Songtsen Gompo.
